| THE
KINGSTON TRIO #16: Released March, 4 1963,
reached chart position #4 SUNNY SIDE: Released July 22, 1963, reached chart position #7 The Kingston Trio (Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane, and John Stewart) recorded three albums in 1963, an amazing feat by today's standards. Even more amazing is the fact that all the records hold up well three decades later. The Trio's 17th album for Capitol Records is curiously entitled #16. It begins with the group's first Top Ten single since "Tom Dooley," "Reverend Mr. Black," which features Stewart doing an amazing Johnny Cash-like lead vocal, and the rare appearance of a sideman on banjo, future superstar Glen Campbell. Shane's solo on the soon-to-be-standard "Try To Remember" is another standout, while Reynolds shines on "Mark Twain" and "River Run Down." And Stewart wrote or co-wrote nine of the album's 12 tracks, including the dazzlingly executed "Run the Ridges." SUNNY SIDE contains the Trio's last Top Forty single, "Desert Pete," a sequel to "Reverend Mr. Black" in all but the subject matter, with Stewart and Campbell reprising their respective roles, and Billy Edd Wheeler providing the vehicle. Wheeler co-wrote another of the albums tracks, "Jackson," later a hit for Johnny Cash and June Carter (with Cash doing an amazing John Stewart-like vocal!) The Trio kicked themselves for ignoring a demo tape from someone named Bob Dylan, but they tried to atone with an after-the-fact cover of "Blowin' In The Wind." Many feel that John Stewart proved himself a writer just as fine a writer with the brilliant "Those Who Are Wise." All told, two albums and 23 tracks from the Reynolds/Shane/Stewart configuration of the Kingston Trio at the height of its popularity and the top of its game. |
