| "Folk
music is as old as yesterday and as new as today. It is
humorous, gregarious; it speaks of the human condition.
The American music scene changed slowly from the big band
sound of the 30's and the 40's to the and roll invasion
of the 50's, but something happened in 1953 that brought
a change to the American musical consciousness. A sound
where old became new and tradition became innovation. A
group known as the Weavers, headed by an American folk
singer named Pete Seeger, introduced to the urban
American public, well, a new kind of popular folk music
and the Weavers, along with Harry Belafonte, sang and led
the way. But the real explosion was reserved for the late
50's when two groups burst onto the mainstream of the
American music life. The Kingston Trio, Glenn Yarborough
and the Limeliters. They provided us with a new music and
they brought it to college campuses all across the
country. They reinvented a wonderful town meeting
tradition. And people came from all around to hear
arousing music. Tonight we will highlight that tradition,
because that music that shaped our taste then and still
continues to shape our taste, is the best of all
traditions. Tonight, there truly is a meeting here." -- Mary Travers |

K's input: OK, so this one's not available on cassette or DVD. I broke down and bought a copy off ebay, and one of these days I may even get to view it, Jerry |
