BOOKLET -- page 3 (back cover):
Known as the originators of the folk music craze of the 60's, the original Kingston Trio consisted of Dave Guard on banjo, Bob Shane on guitar, and Nick Reynolds on guitar and bongos, with all three, on vocols They introduced a sound that was destined to revolutionize the recording and entertainment industry and influence a generation of students, adults and teenagers alike.

The former university students started at the now famous Purple Onion nightclub in San Francisco, where they were booked for a week's engagement. Eight months later, lines were still forming outside the same club to see the trio. In September 1958, "Tom Dooley" hit the charts with a bang, where it remained for 21 weeks and sold nearly 4 million copies. The Trio followed with multiple million-selling albums and singles, rapidly becoming the hottest: attraction in the world. This was known as Kingston-mania, a prelude to the Beatle-mania of 1964. The Kingston Trio made their mark on American and world music and pop culture with their songs, appearance on the cover of LIFE Magazine, "Best Group Of The Year" and "Best Show Attraction Of The Year" honors, and Grammy awards.

The songs and performances spotlighted in this fine collection, are all bona fide hits, a pleasure to hear and remember for years to come!

kgerald's input:

The 12th and final track on this album, "REUBEN JAMES," is credited in error to Alex Harvey and Barry Etris. This Kingston Trio recording is, in fact, THE SINKING OF THE REUBEN JAMES penned by Woodie Guthrie with additional verse by Fred Hellerman. The Harvey-Etris Reuben James is the song made popular by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. The Trio did record an Alex Harvey tune, "I Like To Hear the Rain," on their 1983 album , "Looking For The Sunshine."
